Technical Questions for the WNKY Engineer

TECHNICAL QUESTIONS
Very often I get questions about the technical aspects of digital television. I always try to answer every inquiry in a way non-technical individuals can understand.

Recently I received this inquiry from a viewer:

"I just installed an over the air HD antenna outside my house and I can get a bunch of digital channels now and you all are one of them.  I can even get CBS and NBC from Nashville as well as here in Bowling Green.  I live in Bowling Green and was wondering why you all don't offer the CBS shows in HD.  The Channel 5 in Nashville had CSI:Miami in HD tonight and you all had the same show except it wasn't in HD???  I also noticed that both you and Nashville NBC had their shows playing both in HD.  I am just curious as to why the CBS shows that are in HD on Nashville's station are not being broadcast in HD from WNKY? "

Unfortunately, we do not have the ability to broadcast two high definition signals over the air, due to bandwidth limitations. The reasons are technical but basically, we do not have room in our signal for more than one high definition signal.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) allots us approximately 19.5 Mhz for our channel. NBC in high definition uses about 14Mhz of this bandwidth, thus leaving 5.5 Mhz for additional requirements, including our CBS signal. Since we only have the room for one high definition signal, we opted to have NBC in high definition and air CBS in standard definition.

As always, feel free to send me an email at frank.brucks@wnky.net regarding the technical aspects of television. I will do my best to answer you in as non-technical terms as possible.
