Round 2

Tools

Welcome back for round 2 everyone! You know, there was some fairly big news for the Bowling Green music scene this week and those of you that do the myspace thing and/or know me personally I'm sure have already heard. One of the bands I play in, Commander, has called it quits. We were, by no means, the longest running or most popular band in town but we had 2 CDs, reviews in Europe, and a lot of touring under our belts to make a name for ourselves. I guess instead of using this opportunity to advertise for that band, I'd rather talk about the struggle of keeping a band together, especially when you don't have a record label to back you. I'm sure there's a lot of musicians out there that can either relate or tell the story better than I can but here's my take on the matter:

Bands are like relationships in every sense of the word. In order for it to work, you have to trust who you're with and they have to trust you and you have to contribute equally. You have torespect eachother and know how to handle eachother's personalities, and then how to deal with the personality quirks. Without good communication it will break down, it's only a matter of time. You have to maintain a cool head and be understanding in times of stress, and for God's sake tune up before the show starts!

You always hear about bands that are big that have broken up and the members just can't get along anymore and don't want to work together again. You'd think that the fans, the money, the creativity, and all that would be enough to get people to work through their differences but I can tell you first hand that sometimes there's just nothing that can make it work out. I've been in a lot of bands over the years and out of the handful that I've actually been serious about, this is the second one to actually break up and not end entirely peacefully. I believe as of right now I'm the only one that's on somewhat amicable terms with everyone else. We've got a couple guys that say they never even want to speak to eachother again and I'd be lying if I said I've ever been good about calling people back, especially right now.

I'm sure there's a good chunk of people out there who've never heard of Commander and I'm sure there's just as many that could care less (less competition, hahaha), but if you ever had any interest and never came out to a show, it is too late. If you've got any interest in seeing or hearing what it was all about you can go to www.commanderband.com or www.myspace.com/commanderband and check out some songs, pictures, videos, reviews, all that good stuff. There are still both albums available as well as stickers and shirts and you can order them from the site if you have any interest. At this point I won't be getting any of the money from it so don't take this as an advertising campaign so I can get some cash, I'd really just like for some more people to be able to hear a little bit of what the 4 of us put so much into for a couple of years.
