ROUND 3

Tools

Hey everyone, welcome back to week 3 of my ramblings about the local music scene. This time I want to talk about who I believe to be one of the hidden gems in Bowling Green, Lee Harvey. Lee Harvey (real name Mark Beagle) plays an old style of country/honky tonk. Most of the times that I've seen him he's just got his acoustic guitar with him and that's it but on occasion, such as last Thursday at Dark Star, he had another guitar player accompanying him. Usually Lee Harvey's sets are a good mix of originals and
covers and the covers can be anything from Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard to even Prince. Personally I'd like to see some more originals in his set, I
think he writes some great songs and has the perfect voice for what he's
doing. To my knowledge there isn't really much of a way to get ahold of his
music except for his myspace page (www.myspace.com/leeharvey) and he had a song (Georgial Railway Line) on the Tracks from the Trunk Bowling Green music compilation CD that came out last year.

According to his website, Mark started playing out under the name Lee Harvey back in 1998 and has been from Mississippi to Michigan and everywhere in between. I first saw Mark as Lee Harvey in mid 2002 at the SOKY Fair Battle of the Bands where he and his band played as Lee Harvey and the Texas Book Depository. In mid 2004 when my band Chest Rockwell first got started, Mark was nice enough to give us our first 2 shows playing with him which really helped us to get seen by some people. Not too many bands around here can get over themselves enough to help out someone else trying to get out there and it says a lot to me about Mark that he helped us out back then and we've been able to play a few more shows together over the last couple years.

This being Kentucky, I naturally assume we've got some fans of good old
country music and if you haven't heard Lee Harvey yet, you are truly missing
out. On his website the following local shows are listed and I strongly
urge you to make it out to one: March 6th at Java City (WKU campus at the library) at 12 noon for a free performance March 22nd at 10 pm at Dark Star (downtown on the square) for another free show.

That's it for this time, be sure to swing by The Great Escape records and
comics Friday March 2nd at 9pm for the Chest Rockwell CD release show. It's
a free show but the new album will cost you a mere $6.

See you next time
