Tropical Storm Chantal

As many of you know, I don't have to tell you it's been a rather inactive hurricane season so far. The official beginning of the Atlantic hurricane season was on June 1st. We're now two months into the season with only our third named tropical cyclone, Tropical Storm Chantal. "Ms." Chantal is churning off in the Atlantic between Bermuda and Massachusetts and forecast to steer away (northeast) from the United States, possibly bringing heavy rain to parts of Newfoundland. Maximum sustained winds are currently at 50 mph and this storm is expected to be short-lived. The National Hurricane Center's 3-Day forecast for Chantal is posted below.

It's not too unusual that we're only on our third named storm. The busiest and most active months are usually August and September. So, it will be interesting to see if things heat up anytime soon. If you're a hurricane enthusiast and want to keep track of what the National Hurricane Center is monitoring, they now have a graphical version of their Tropical Weather Outlook (see below).

We still have nearly four months left until the hurricane season ends on November 30th. Do we see hurricanes outside of the official season? It can happen! Remember Hurricane Epsilon during the first week of December in the record-setting year of 2005? The NHC accounts for about five December hurricanes based on the last 121 years. And, going back to the 2004 season, we didn't even see our first named storm (Hurricane Alex) until August 1st. Click here to see an animation of Alex brushing the North Carolina coast. With these examples, obviously the tropical activity for each season can greatly vary. I'll of course keep you up-to-date right here in my blog as the season progresses.
