Attend Earth Day Festival for Fun, Entertainment, and Environmental Inspiration!

The Second Annual Earth Day Festival will be hosted by The GreenToppers Students for Campus Sustainability, and S.AM. (Students Against Monotony) on April 22 at Western Kentucky University. Everyone is invited to come enjoy live music, guest speakers, booths with helpful information and great free stuff, activities, and much more.

The event will be 10:30am-8:00pm and is located on the South Lawn, next to Downing University Center. Invited Guest speakers include members of the famous WKU Speech and Forensics Team, Provost Burch, President Ransdell, and others. Music will be provided by Just Us, Mr. Dink, Jordan Pendley, Steven and the Ghosts (starring Steven Page of Steven and the Ghosts fame), and Joey Coe. Many local business and organizations will have booths providing helpful information on how to better care for our planet and great free giveaways. Activities include a Critical Mass Bike Ride, Arts and Crafts Table, Drum Circle, Bake Sale, Solar Smoothies, a Hackey Sack Tournament, an Energy Star light bulb exchange booth, and Arbor Day tree bagging preparations. Phi Sigma Pi will be collecting plastic bags to recycle and there will also be a very important ribbon cutting ceremony for the new recycling bin by SGA. Gary Force will also have hybrid cars on display.

Jim Coby, Western student and event coordinator hopes the event will offer opportunity for fun and education, “I not only want people to walk away from the festival saying, "Hey that was a great time!" I also want them to say, "Yeah, but I didn't know that driving around town caused so much ecological damage, maybe I'll start riding my bike from here on."

Actually, you can catch a free ride that day on a GO Bus! GO BG Transit is celebrating Earth day with a free ride day for the general public on April 22th. It’s a great way to get to the festival, and a chance to see how it easy to get around on Bowling Green’s public transit.

The Earth Day Festival will be a great opportunity to learn, to be inspired and entertained, and to share in the festivities. Jim Coby has a simple goal for the day, “I want everyone who attends to not only have the best time possible, but also to become a more environmentally informed (and concerned) member of this big community we call earth.”

President of GreenToppers, Sara Ferguson said that, “Along with the many booths, speakers, and activities- the GreenToppers and S.A.M. hope to convey a message. There is one day set aside each year for Americans to acknowledge their impact on our planet and appreciate what it gives us, but for GreenToppers and S.A.M., every day is Earth Day.”
