WKU Announces Lyon County Scholarship To Honor Ty Rogers
Bowling Green, Ky. - Ty Rogers’ game changing shot in the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament may also change the lives of some Lyon County students.
Western Kentucky University President Gary Ransdell has announced that the $100,000 WKU received from Pontiac Motors when the shot was named the Pontiac Game Changing Performance will be used to create the Ty Rogers Scholarship Fund. Rogers’ three-point shot as time expired in overtime against Drake University propelled WKU into the second round of the tournament. CBS viewers voted the shot the Game Changing Performance. Rogers, a WKU senior, was a basketball standout at Lyon County High School. The award was used to create an endowment in the College Heights Foundation. Earnings from the endowment will be used to fund a $1,250 scholarship to WKU to a Lyon County High School graduate each year beginning in the fall of 2009. The scholarships will be renewable for up to four years. “We trust that this award will become something that students in Lyon County aspire to achieve, not just for the modest financial boost, but also to walk in the steps of Ty and emulate his character, academic strength and discipline,” Dr. Ransdell said. The scholarship was announced during the annual post-season banquet for the Hilltopper Basketball team when John Casmon of Pontiac presented the $100,000 check to the university. |
