Hilltopper RoundupMen’s Hoop The matador defense returned to Diddle last night as WKU succumbed to Florida Atlantic 78-73. That’s right, I said Florida Atlantic. The FAU that was 4-11 on the road coming into the game. The FAU that is playing in their inaugural Sun Belt campaign. The FAU that has the 17th worse Defensive Efficiency in the country. That FAU. Coming into the game, it looked like the stars were aligned for a big Topper win. WKU had been playing better defense of late, and FAU is a poor road team. But, that sandcastle was quickly crumbled into the sea by a tidal wave of FAU layups. The Owls shot a blistering 60% from the field mostly due to a parade of open dunks and bunnies allowed by a porous, trapping Topper defense. WKU has a lot of work to do in very short order to get into shape for a Sun Belt tournament run. It has to start at Troy on Saturday, where the Tops were demolished 76-49 last season. Lady Toppers The Lady Topper postseason chances are somewhat brighter. They are showing up consistently in bracket projections and have a healthy RPI of 23. However, they lack quality wins, although they have been able to avoid any losses to bad teams. A lofty RPI was not enough to get them into the Big Dance last year, so Coach Cowles and company cannot rest easy. But, if they lose only to MTSU in the conference tourney, they would probably be in decent shape for an at-large bid. Of course, that is what most folks thought last year, too. Diamond Toppers The Topper baseball team got off to a solid start last weekend in Wilmington, North Carolina, scoring wins over UNC-Wilmington and Oklahoma. The Tops dropped one game to South Carolina, but the 2-1 starts sets them up nicely for a big 10-game home stand in the next few weeks. In fact, the Tops play 13 of their next 14 at home over the next month! So, pick a warm day and head to Nick Denes field for some early baseball action. Miami (OH) is in this weekend for games on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Gridiron Tops The stadium renovation is in full swing. Coach David Elson is hiring new coordinators left and right. WKU just signed 31 players in their first even D-IA recruiting class. The Toppers will open the 2007 against national champion Florida in The Swamp. It is a time of excitement and transition for the pigskin Tops. Furthermore, the athletics department is offering season tickets for $25 next year, and they deserve kudos for this move. Widespread community support of this program is needed to succeed at the highest level and building the fan base is job one. Most Popular |
