Fisher addresses team's free agency status
NASHVILLE, TN, March 9, 2007 — After visiting with four players this week, Titans head coach Jeff Fisher said the team will continue bringing in more free agents next week. He addressed the team's status in the free agency market with reporters Friday at Baptist Sports Park. HEAD COACH JEFF FISHER (on free agency) We’ve had four visits as you know. Several days ago we had Jamar Fletcher and Dante Stallworth in. Yesterday we had two very good visits with Ryan Fowler and Nick Harper. We will continue to bring players in next week and things are going well. I’m really happy with the way Mike (Reinfeldt) is handling things and how Vinny (Marino) is handling things. We’re in the ballpark right now. (on if having money and spending money are two completely different things) Yes, two completely different things. There is value that one must place on a player. People refer to this as the next tier. These are players that can come in and help us and we wouldn’t have them here if we didn’t think that they could come in and help us. You have to look at the market. At the same time, see what’s available in the draft and then make the best decision. I’m pleased with the way things are going. (on if he will attending some college Pro Days this year) I will be attending some Pro Days and the staff as well will be attending Pro Days. In addition to Pro Days, the staff will be setting up numerous amounts of private workouts on their own. (on when the Pro Days started) They started this past week. Our scouts have attended all of them. The Pro Days started about eight to 10 days ago. (on if he is confident that LenDale White can step up as the starter) We had confidence in playing him last year. There’s no doubt that’s what we drafted him for. I expect him to have a great off-season and come back and be the guy. I have also said that we have bought into the running back by committee theory. So I will fully expect to have at least one, maybe two more on the roster by the time camp starts. (on if he senses frustration by the fan base that the Titans haven’t made any moves) That’s understandable, but it’s been years before that we haven’t done it. Just because we have a lot of cap room doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to go out and overspend for a player. We’re watching the market and watching the money that is being spent. We’re very aware of the players that are still available. (on if they’re being more selective) One thing that is interesting is players want to come here. They want to come play because of the improvement, because of the way we finished up the season and because of Vince. So that’s exciting. As far as targeting a particular player with specific ability; I assume you’re talking about the receiver position; we want guys that can run around and make plays with speed and those kinds of things. We have some on our roster and there are still some others out there that can do that. (on if they will address the need spots on the roster before the draft with free agents or just wait until the draft) We can go in (the draft), but I think that would be unlikely. We will fill some spots without a question before we go into the draft on both sides of the ball. There are players out there that expressed interest that we think we can work deals with and get under contract before the draft. (on when players will come back in the facility as a group) The first day that they’re permitted to return is the 19th (March) a week from Monday. We expect most if not all of them to be coming back. We have a number of them that are here working out on their own. That goes behind those that are rehabbing. We have a couple of dozen players that have been in the last couple of weeks because they miss it and they want to work. Most Popular |
