Do you know someone who stands out as a champion for promotion of local foods? When people buy locally, everyone wins because spending on food is kept within the local economy. Winners of the region's first Local Food Awards will be announced on Thursday, October 24 as part of the Food Day 2013 celebration at the WKU Ag Expo Center.
People who live or work across south central Kentucky are encouraged to vote for people and organizations who are most deserving in these categories:
• Local Food Farmer of the Year
• Local Food Chef of the Year
• Local Food Community Champion
• Local Food Youth Awards
• Farm to School Award
• Local Food Higher Education Award:
A total of 21 nominations were accepted from the public during the month of August. Anyone can vote once daily through September 30 at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/HXXK7H5.
The nominations and voting process is being managed by the Barren River District Health Department on behalf of partner organizations who have organized Food Day 2013. Food Day is a national celebration of foods that are healthy, affordable and sustainably produced.
"We are excited to participate in the regional Food Day celebration and educational conference," stated Public Health Director Dennis Chaney, "Of the five priority health issues being addressed through the Barren River Community Health Plan 2013-15, three of them are fundamentally related to nutrition. Obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease all have dietary components, and good nutrition plays a major role in prevention for each of these health problems. Food Day 2013 is a time to look at ways that people who grow, distribute, buy, prepare or sell local foods can help play a bigger role in local health promotion and the local economy."
The 2013 Food Day event will be held from 9am until 6pm on Thursday, October 25 at the WKU Ag Expo Center, 406 Elrod Road, in Bowling Green. A Local Foods Lunch from noon until 1:30 will include the award presentations. Anyone is welcome to attend the award presentation, even if they do not choose to purchase a lunch.
