Riley Miller, an eighth grade student at Drakes Creek Middle School, has been selected as one of the nation's top 10 youth volunteers in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. Miller received the honor Monday, May 5 during a ceremony in Washington, D.C. She was recognized for her work in organizing an annual citywide day of lemonade sales for the past three years to raise money for childhood cancer research. Miller, who has lost two little brothers to leukemia, managed 200 volunteers and 29 lemonade stands last year, collecting more than $19,000 and bringing her three-year total to $50,000.
Miller was among 102 honorees to receive all-expense-paid trips to the Spirit of Community Awards ceremony at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. Each of those honorees received $1,000 awards and silver medallions. As one of the top 10 honorees, Miller receives an additional $5,000 and a gold medallion. She will also earn a $5,000 grant from the Prudential Foundation for a charity of her choice, and Drakes Creek will receive a crystal trophy in her honor. The awards program is conducted by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
