Drakes Creek student wins spelling bee

Drakes Creek Middle School student Shaumik Alam was the overall winner in the Third District Kentucky Derby Festival Spelling Bee held February 11 at Warren East Middle School. The winning words were “vendetta” and “clearance”. Alam will represent the Third District at the State Spelling Bee in Louisville on March 20. The runner-up is Andrew Eller from Oakland Elementary.

There were 14 participants from within the district. Individual school winners in addition to Alam and Eller were Anthony Alexander, North Warren Elementary; Jay Buser, St. Joseph; Cullen Batts, W.R. McNeill Elementary; Kaitlyn Comer, Warren East Middle; Christian Dowless, Dishman McGinnis Elementary; Rebecca Keister, Bristow Elementary; Madtsen Massey, Warren Elementary; Stephen Mayer, Barren River Home School Association; Natalie Poff, Rich Pond Elementary; King Spencer, Potter Gray Elementary; Darius Tucker, T.C. Cherry Elementary; and Sam Tuggle, Cumberland Trace Elementary.
